Year 3, Semester 1

what sets your soul on fire?
i'm sure it's not grades.
chase after what makes you truly happy.

GET1038 Communication in Small Groups
Lecturer: Dr Debelina Dutta
Dr Debelina was very enthusiastic and friendly, she makes monday morning lectures so much better! her lessons are filled with videos and food (sometimes). videos can be as lame as The Office but it is so applicable too! her slides are clean and concise, which made revision easier. she set up study groups during reading week so that we can consult her, she even gave us her handphone number so that we can text her questions! she insisted to meet every group before our group presentations and i really appreciate her dedication to this module. i'm really impressed by the extra effort she puts in for her students and i really enjoyed going for her lectures :)

Weightage:

10% participation
25% mid-term
30% group project
35% final exam
the group project was broken down into multiple components. there was a group contract, group paper, individual paper, presentation and peer-review. i admit that there was quite a bit to do for the group project. but because Dr Debs provided the guidelines, deadlines and all required materials early in the semester, we were able to finish it pretty early! So it wasn’t too much of a hassle for us.
The group project was a task to critically evaluate a communication tool.

Exam format: close book, MCQ, SAQ
Mid term was an open book, online exam on McQ and saq. It was my first time doing an exam online so that was quite and experience! It was very manageable to the point that Dr debs decided to do away with McQ in finals bcos everyone did too well in it :o
Finals was closed book and just saq. You’d think that a gem exam would be short and essay but no! I legitimately had arm ache the following day for the whole day o.o and very few people left early and many of us finished writing our ‘short’ answer questions just on the dot! It was a mad rush that caught me off guard lol. But the questions were prettt straightforward and memory based so it was okay :-) hopefully the bell curve won’t be too steep.

Workload: 3.75/5

As mentioned earlier, Dr Debs told us the deadlines for our submissions very early in the semester, and even extended it towards the end! so we had ample time to complete our submissions which included a group contract, individual reflection, peer review and a group paper. although it seems like a lot of things to submit, they were easy to complete in a short period of time as Dr Debs gave us very clear guidelines to follow for submission! we were really held by the hand throughout the whole module and we liked it hehe.
Textbook readings were manageable because the content was very understandable and commonsensical. The ebook version can be found online and my friend and I printed it out instead of buying the physical textbook :)

Tutorial Format:
Tutorials were super chill! Raksha was my tutor and she is very patient and understanding and friendly :-) we had different activities throughout the semester! Best tutorial was when we were tasked to build the tallest tower using recycled material. My group went around utown to collect all the cupboards we could find and our tower touched the ceiling of the tutorial room haha! Other tutorials were quite boring tbh it was just going through concepts and there were long breaks in between so I guess it was paced well.

overall, I enjoyed this module mainly because I took it with a friend! :) the content is quite applicable to real life and relatable too. It’s a handy module to increase your general knowledge of communication heh. I’d recommend it because of the applicable content!

HY2249 Art & History
Lecturer: Maurizio Peleggi
My first Italian lecturer haha. He was pretty chill and very knowledgeable! Classes were nice because he’d ‘take’ us to the place using google maps and he’d tell us stories about his experiences with the art irl. There were definitely many moments I couldn’t understand his accent tho..

Weightage: 100% CA

5 x 20% in-class quiz
‘Very easy very easy!’ says  the lecturer but I got detiorating grades :(( so there is a 30 written quiz during every fortnight tutorial where we’re supposed to memorize all the paintings and it’s formal + content analysis, and Peleggi would flash 1 painting on the screen and we have to write all about it. I thought it was easy and manageable until I got back my paper each week..
The final test was about the past 13 weeks’ work where Peleggi would select 3 art works from 10 lectures and we’d have to prep for it. I can’t believe I actually memeorized 30 art pieces lol it was a lot.

Workload: 3.5/5
There were readings and tho they were compulsory, I don’t think it’d have value added to the tests, just your general knowledge. I wish I had knew earlier so that I wouldn’t have had to spend so much time in rbr and photocopying the content which was a lot of pages!
Having to prepare for a week every fortnight was also quite troublesome.. but I actually enjoyed it! I learnt so much about th painting and art is truly so beautiful and meaningful. Artists are great people :) if I could have the chance to study art leisurely, I totally would!!

Tutorial Format:
Yup so tutorials were split into 2 portions, 30 min quiz and the rest of the time was spent listening to Peleggi talk haha :)

overall, I really enjoyed this module! Despite my very poor grades throughout the sem, I actually enjoyed this module the most among my 5 mods this sem :-) its so interesting and the content is something you will only get if you go to the museum itself and get a tour guide :) or voluntarily google it up haha. While preparing for the tests, I’d google about the art to learn more about it, hoping that it’ll add some brownie points into my quiz answer (but I guess it didn’t) and I learnt so much from it!
Oh yes, apparently 0 history background is needed for this module :-) the last time I touched history as in lower secondary haha. But I must say that this module is to the advantage of true art students who can write well and analyze well, otherwise you’ll struggle like me haha. I’m not fluent in my writing so I guess that’s why I didn’t do well for my quizzes. But I’d definitely recommend this module! More than the GEM mentioned above hehe!

PL3240 Group Dynamics
Lecturer: Dr Cha Yeow Siah
Dr Cha is nice :-) although he speaks fast in class, he makes lecture enjoyable by playing songs before lecture starts and puts case studies into every lecture to make the content more applicable. And these real life events made me realize how big and scary the world is: while we were in a comfortable lecture theatre learning, there are others trying to escape from being shot by people who are against their race :-(
Dr cha’s slides are pretty clean and straightforward! He summarized the textbook well, which was useful because the textbook we used as SO messy and it was difficult to study it.
He also posted longgg post-lecture announcements which were like debriefs for what we learnt.

Weightage:

20% mid term
22% group project (12% presentation, 10% report)
8% critical thinking assignment
50% finals
The group project was really fun! We were tasked to make a video of ANY content. I love the creativity freedom! We were randomly sorted into our groups. I thought it’d be a time consuming project but we took lesser time than expected! We only took 1 day out of recess week to come up w the script, film and edit the video. Really thankful that I’ve got groupmates who were familiar w filmmaking so it made the process smoother :)
The presentation was just having to show our video and share what were our take aways within 15 minutes. It was the most chill presentation I’ve ever had haha.
The report was an individual reflection essay where we had to apply the concepts we have learnt into our project.
The critical thinking assignment was a tough one for me because I’m not a good critical thinker. We were given 5 different topics to choose from, each topic released every 2 weeks and due 1 week after its release. Thank goodness Dr cha gave us the option of redoing the assignment (but on another topic) if we didn’t do well previously. I did it twice lol.

Exam format: close book, MCQ, FITB, 2C1 SAQ, Case Study
Mid term was closed book, McQ and FITB. The questions were super application based! And Dr cha tested us on things like “in the song played during lecture ... which concept did it apply?” Or he’d ask us about the details in the case studies in lectures. So it’s important to go for lecture!

Finals were closed book and all of the above. there was so much content to memorized, i have not felt so stressed over an exam since PL3239.

Workload: 5/5
The workload was the heaviest because there was just TOO MUCH content to remmeber and TOO MANY keywords to memorize. My friends and I were struggling so badly. It was to the point where I couldn’t recall what to write for the saq during finals because there was too much in my brain already. Finals was not funny. I didn’t feel confident over it either.

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were pretty chill! Sarah was my tutor and amazingly, she remembers me from more than 2 sems ago! tutorial was mainly about applying what we learnt. we had case studies, impromptu presentations, and our actual group project presentations. we spend our last tutorial playing taboo, group dynamics style haha. it was a fun and good way to revise and recap our content.

overall, i like this module only because of the content. it was very interesting to learn about how groups work. unfortunately this interest did not supersede the fact that it was SO time consuming and content heavy. there was no practice bank floating around so i had to google for practice questions which were time consuming too. written notes for each chapter in an a4 notebook could take up to 8 pages... i would recommend this module for its content if you're interested in people, but maybe not under Dr Cha, or this textbook, bcos there is seriously too much content to be memorized and i wouldn't want anyone to go through what we did..

PL3242 Health Psychology
Lecturers: Dr Tsai Fen Fang
this was my second time having a module under Dr Tsai! i have grown to enjoy her lectures and her teaching. she has her own sense of humor and bubbliness i enjoy! although there were still some moments when i could not understand her accent, her teaching is quite clear and straightforward. she does not mumble or say too many extra stuff that is not mentioned in the lecture slides. her slides are very clean and short too, neatly summarizing the entire chapter for us.
i heard that the previous lecturers for this module made the workload harder bcos students had to do some health brochure assignment, a reason why i didn't take this mod earlier. so when i saw that it was dr tsai teaching this mod, i jumped for it hahaha! also because i saw that the grading was different as well.

Weightage:
30% tutorial (15% presentation, 10% reflection paper, 5% tutorial attendance & participation)
30% mid term
40% finals
we were allowed to form our own groups to present on one of the 4 topics that the tutor will give us.  the presentation was based on 2 readings. the reflection paper was an individual assignment that we have to write about regarding one of the topic's 2 readings.

Exam format: close book, MCQ, 5 SAQ, 1 Essay

mid terms only consisted of MCQ. unfortunately, there was no question bank floating around for this module and i had to google for practice questions too. for mid term, Dr Tsai mainly tested application questions of the key words we use. many people left within 30 minutes although the test was 1 hour haha.. the test was manageable if you study because it's quite commonsensical too. i think that's why the bell curve was SO steep and getting 5 marks below average got me in the 25th percentile already..

finals had all of the above and included our tutorial readings. for the mcq, Dr Tsai tested a lot on the tutorial reading's result section, so take note of that! i was taken aback because i only memorized the gitz of the study and not the exact results which she asked for.. there was only 1 essay which made it scarier because if we did not study that portion in depth, we'd be doom! i have a feel that the bell curve will be equally steep for finals...

Workload: 3/5

i'd say that the workload for this module is the lightest among the 3 PL mods i took this sem. the presentation did not take up too much time as the content to be presented was only released 1 week before our presentation. revising for this module was quick too as there was not too much content to remember and many of the chapters linked up to each other so it was easier to understand the content.

Tutorial Format:

Zher Wen was my tutor and tutorials were held every fortnight. there will be 1 group presenting each tutorial and can take up to 45 minutes, excluding Q&A! the tutor asked most of the questions. he mumbles quite a bit and it was hard to listen and understand what he was saying, especially if you're in the audience listening and not presenting. that was about all we did for the tutorial haha..

overall, i actually enjoyed this module although i took it alone :) i enjoyed the content because it's so relatable to real life situations and it raised my interest in the healthcare sector. the content is the lightest among all the psych mods i took this sem, and the content was easy to understand too! i'd recommend this module if you're looking for a lightweighted module :)

(ps, if you'd like to purchase the pdf textbook, do leave a comment! would gladly help ya out hehe)

PL3244 Adolescent Psychology
Lecturer: Dr Lee Li Neng
i've heard so many good things about Dr Lee and it's all true! Dr Lee is the most engaging psych lecturer i've ever had and i really enjoyed going for his lectures or listening to them over webcasts. YES, there was webcast for this module! it's so rare to come across a psych mod with webcast haha. Dr Lee conducted his lectures differently. at the end of each lecture, he'd make us fill up a short form online to ask questions about the week's content. he'd then gather the qns, answer them and put them nicely into slides, which were the first things to be addressed in the following week's lectures. and he takes in all types of questions! i like this approach as it helps me clarify my concepts. then, he starts teaching that week's content. he doesn't cover the entire chapter, nor give a brief summary of it like the other modules, but he picks up the more important concepts and focuses on it.

Weightage:

25% group proposal
25% project proposal presentation
50% finals
we were tasked to either come up with a study or implement a solution to any specific problem that adolescents are facing today. it was a good precursor for ado lab haha. my group decided to implement a solution!
there was so much discussion and meetings involved in this project, the most i have ever had i think! it was a very independent project and feedback was only given to us through our already-graded group proposal. but i'm very thankful that i had a proactive group and everyone was on the balls of their feet for this project, giving 100% attention and effort! most productive and efficient group ever, i admit hehe. we did pretty well for our group proposal so i hope that will save some of my grade!

Exam format: close book, 4C2 SAQ, 2C1 Essay

there was no mid terms for this module, mid term week's lecture was replaced with a mass group project meeting for our project. this really helped to give us more time to discuss because the project wasn't the easiest.
final's content was all 12 weeks of content. it was crazy to memorize it! but not as crazy as pl3240. for the first time ever, i actually enjoyed doing the exam paper haha.
thankfully, there were past year papers released on the nus library, which helped me so much in my revision! there was also a question bank available so that was great :)

(ps, if you'd like to purchase the qn bank & the pdf textbook, do leave a comment! would gladly help ya out hehe)

Workload: 4/5

i'd say that the workload is slightly heavier than PL3242 because of the semester-long project and the 12 weeks' worth of content we had to memorize for finals. start your revision early, it'll really help!

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were enjoyable. we had to prepare for the tutorial questions beforehand which were based on 1 reading. but it was not too time consuming :) during tutorial, our tutor would go through the questions and also apply what we have learnt to real life (eg, stereotypes of adolescents). we were also given some time to discuss for our project, which i appreciated because it showed that they understood the amount of effort and time we needed to put into it. we were able to choose our own groupmates too! the last tutorial was spent listening to each other's project's presentations!

overall, i thinkkk i kinda enjoyed this module. i really dreaded it initially because i'm not interested in the developmental aspect of psychology. but the more i study about it, the more interesting it gets! and it let me reflect on my teenage years (trolol im not that old tho) and see if it really applied to my life as well. the project was interesting and i enjoyed it too! really glad that the written component was a group effort, otherwise my grades would be so affected as usual.

--

yeap! this concludes my first half of year 3. i can't believe i'm even halfway done with y3 already! still accidentally introducing myself as a year 2 haha. time really flies, treasure every day and every lecture you go for!

for me, this semester was really different. most of my friends were on exchange and i took more modules, than usual, alone. it really affected my overall mood and i was also less involved in my dance group. despite the lack of activities, i've learnt so much during the journey.

God revealed to me in the book of Ecclesiastes that work is a gift from Him. a blessing, a joy! and every thing we have, first comes from God. the whole idea that work, aka studying for finals, is a gift from God, really gave me a new perspective and attitude towards studying. i asked Him how can i honor Him and involve Him in my studies, and not just only think of Him when i do my bible reading every morning. through a friend, i learnt how to do so! i learnt to be more aware of what i am studying and how it relates to God's creation. i'm studying psychology, people, after all! and it's so amazing how we are all uniquely created, yet so similar at the same time. we're similar in the processes we go through, in the general life experience we go through, etc. and that just reflects God's greatness and vastness in knowledge about creation! so amazing :') i really found a renewed sense of joy and hope throughout this exam period, which was a first to me.

studying is more than just getting the grade. but it also shows how God has blessed all of us with the opportunity to gain knowledge of our majors and UEs! not everyone has this privilege, even if they had the ability to get into a tertiary institution. i believe the God has opened my eyes towards my tertiary education to see it more as a gift and a blessing from Him, than a chore and a grade-driven race i am on. because ultimately, He holds my, and your, future in His hands! this is the hope i stand for; one that brings me joy, comfort, peace and confidence :-) you may or may not believe in Jesus, but He knows your future and He has the best interest in mind for you. if only you'd call out to Him with an open and sincere heart, i assure you that He will answer you because He loves you too! <3

i hope that you had a great semester in school too :-) have a splendid winter vacation!

God bless!

Year 3 Sem 1 Week 1

A different picture this semester:
don't just focus on yourself and your grades.
take the time to look around,
appreciate your friends,
love them unconditionally,
and tell them that they are beautiful.

hands down, this period of bidding has been the most horrible, hair-wreaking time i have ever had.
not only was i unable to secure a lab and 4k module, i wasn't able to bid for the modules i had in mind. and i had 5 alternative modules in mind. it was terrible!!!

oddly in the midst of the panic, i had peace. and i knew that it can only be from Christ because such a panic-y person like me can never be calm in such a situation where plan A, B, C, D and E did not work. deep down in my spirit, i knew that there is nothing to be worried about because at the end of the day, i will still have my 5 modules. they may not be the ones i want, but they are definitely the ones that God has best in mind for me. and knowing that this situation was under His control, i felt peaceful in His presence.

and in the end, i'm taking:
PL3240 Group Dynamics
PL3242 Health Psychology
PL3244 Adolescent Psychogy
HY2249 Art and History
GET1038 Communication in Small Groups

3/5 of the modules are never part of my plans, and honestly i don't know how i am actually gonna make it through art and history because the last time i touched a history subject was in secondary 2 :o and i didn't want GET1038 because it has exam and i was trying to have 3 exams only. in the end, i have 4 exams and the dates aren't pretty. sigh. breathe, breathe, His grace is sufficient for me.

i foresee this semester to be really different because of the unexpected modules and all my close friends in school are going on exchange :(( it's going to be a tough semester but i'm looking forward to see what is going to happen. a new semester means a new adventure with Jesus! new experiences with God's unconditional, unfailing love, grace and mercy. :-) and He is here for you too, right here, right now. call out to Jesus and He will answer you for sure, because He loves you as much and as unconditionally too! <3

i hope you got the modules you want! time passes really fast in university, make the most of it my friends :') i can't believe i'm year 3 already! it's really too fast and i just want everything to slow down.

have a splendid semester 1! there's so much more to life than copping yourself at home or fretting about your grades. in the end, it's about who you are and how you carry yourself that determines where you end up :-) treasure the time you have, appreciate your friends, spend time with the people you love and surround yourself with friends who build each other up, not tear each other down :)

God bless!

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

FAS2551 Review

Hello!

how has your summer been? i hope it has been a blast :-)

i spent 11 weeks of summer on an internship and i took the internship under FAS2551 FASS Internship. just wanted to do a short and quick review about this module.

FAS2551 is basically a 4MC S/U UE module you can take while doing your internship! the workload is pretty light, given the very strict word character limit.

Weightage:
5% work plan
25% fortnight journal
20% final report
50% supervisor's feedback

i would say that taking this module alongside my internship was very manageable.

The Bad:
An NUS vpn was needed to access AIMS (the website to submit your reports). i tried downloading the software but it did not work, so i had to go back to school every fortnight just to upload my journal submission.. it was really annoying and time consuming!

although my academic supervisor replies my emails promptly, but our collaboration with my workplace supervisor was slow. getting approval from school is easy but from work is, not hard but, slow. but after i was cleared and approved, the rest was good.

The Good:
the limited character count really taught me to get straight to the point and keep the irrelevant information out. i was initially frustrated with the super small 500 chac count but i guess i got the hang of it after a few journal entires :)

free SU! i get to take 1 less UE in the future hurray!

although i had to attend some compulsory FASS interview and resume writing workshop, i really learnt a lot from it :) it's also a good eye opener to the working world before stepping into it!

//

i have yet to receive my results for this module but according to my friend, it's a sure-pass module haha. i hope so!

cheerios!

Year 2, Semester 2

PL3234 Developmental Psychology
Lecturers: Dr Nina Powell
Dr Powell is really nice, but she speaks really fast. for the first time ever, i had to slow down my e lecture to catch what she is saying haha! She also gave us many hints for our mid term and finals, so it was kinda easier to study for it! Her slides are rather neat and she uses a blended classroom teaching style. She uses many videos during class, which makes lectures really enjoyable! Dr Powell engages us with socrative quizzes to help test our understanding of what we had learnt during the week's e-lecture, which makes lectures even more enjoyable! i didn't skip a single lecture of her's because it's so fun to go hahaha! the best thing about Dr Powell is that her exams are not cumulative and what is not covered in class from the textbook is not tested! so essentially we did not have to read our textbooks for this module because her notes were sufficient :-)

Weightage:
20% Tutorial activities & presentations
40% mid term
40% finals
Tutorial activities included a group work for every fortnightly tutorial that needed to be submitted at the end of class, so there was barely any homework for this module. group work was based on what we had learnt, applying it to real life situations. it was enjoyable as well because tutorial was interactive between our tutor and our group mates! Presentations were not slides presentations but rather how we presented our answers for our group work. each group would take about 5 minutes to explain their work at our own tables, which makes it extra chill!

Exam format: close book
50 MCQ
6C5 SAQ
MCQs were rather tricky but they were manageable. her SAQs were really short, requiring only half a page of answers only! the best part is, she lets us answer in point form, as long as we put our point across. Dr Powell is really flexible with our answering style which makes it less stressful. top it up with her countless hints during class, the paper was manageable.

Workload: 3.5/5
i would say that the workload is slightlyyy heavier but it's not as bad as what my seniors have described. Dr Powell's e-lectures would take up to the most 30 minutes of my week, which is very manageable! her content is not too heavy either. but revision was tricky because she said that she would test us themes revolving around the development stuff, which is not taught directly in class hence more thinking was needed during revision. but memory work was not too bad either because Dr Powell took out a lot of the content and summarised the remaining content.

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were held fortnightly so it was not too bad. but the group work was rather rough and i did not do too well for it. it required more thinking in dept and there was a lot of readings for tutorials. but they were not tested and it was alright to not read the readings for class hahaha. i had very lovely group mates tho and we got along really well! they made class more enjoyable :)

overall, i enjoyed this module! the workload was not too bad and the content was not too heavy as expected. i didn't enjoy the content entirely because it isn't my field of interest, but it was good enough. watching the videos in class made the content come to life which helps application and memory work even better!

PL3236 Abnormal Psychology
Lecturers: Dr Marc Oliver Suendermann
it was Dr S's first time lecturing and i should give him a benefit of doubt, right? hahaha. ah he was nice, but he kinda mumbles and every lecture he'd says something like can you please lower down your volume or please move to the front, but nobody moves haha. he'd say the formal when there is a LOW mumble going on at the back of the lecture hall and he'd say that it's distracting. ????. but okay since it's his first time teaching i guess he was not used to non-total silence. his slides are kinda messy too, but he showed us some videos during lectures so class wasn't THAT bad.

Weightage:
15% class presentation
10% participation
15% mid terms
60% finals
the module was really chill actually! we only had 1 class presentation on a case study and participation points could be earned by just answering one question or asking one during class (i think!). i personally felt that mid terms had more to memorize than finals, it's odd that the weightage is so different.

Exam format: close book
100 MCQ midterm
50 MCQ final + 1 Case Vignette - 5 SAQ
there was so much to memorize for midterms omgosh it was quite terrible. i must say that the content is heavier than developmental actually. although mcq for finals were not cumulative, but the case vignette included every chapter. i died revising for this module because there was too much to remember!
one good thing was that the lecturer took most of the mcq from the question bank. although he didn't give us the access code for the current edition's question bank, we managed to find the previous edition's bank and practiced on it. it came in really handy and useful! the case vignette questions were the same as previous year's questions, but only a different disorder for each case, so it was easier to prepare for it. i do have 2 sets of question banks that i'm selling, if you are interested, do leave a comment!

Workload: 4/5
i'd say that this module has the heaviest workload among all my modules this sem bcos of the extremely heavy content. the presentation did not take up too much time but a significant effort is needed to be put into it as it was not an informal lighthearted presentation. i enjoyed going for tutorials too because my tutor was really lovely and the presentations were interesting!

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were held fortnightly too with 2 groups presenting per lesson. the presentation took as long as 40 minutes, including Q&A. many groups had cue cards during the presentation as the script was longer than our usual presentations. but it was informative and interesting to read about the various case studies! there were no readings for this module too :)

overall, i enjoyed this mod more than developmental psych because of the content! it was eye opening to read about the different disorders and watching videos of real patients; it brings the content to life! listening to my tutor's stories about her different experiences is very inspiring too :) i'd recommend yall to take this mod w a lighter psych mod or to take fewer psych mods with this as the content can be very taxing.

SW2104 Human Development Over Lifespan
Lecturers: Dr Ong Teck Hong
Dr Ong is a very knowledgable lecturer, no surprise because he has been lecturing the same module for over 15 years! i heard that the time and venue had not change too until this semester. although his slides were very messy and the formatting was terrible (many of us had to reformat for neater notes!), they were very very summarised and simple, which makes revision much easier. He also has a collection of newspapers with news dating back to 1993! he'd show us numerous newspaper articles during lecture so it's essential to go for class bcos he said that he'd test on the articles! (but he didn't lol) however, lectures can get a bit boring as he just reads off the slides. i think many of us went for the newspaper articles only hahaha oopsies.

Weightage:
40% Group project
60% finals
60% finals is pretty crazy! our group project included 1 group project on playgrounds and 1 debate. which means that each project carried a high weightage itself too! there was no mid terms for this, which i'm really grateful for :)

Exam format: open book
2 essays
finals was 60 marks with 2 questions. it was Dr Ong's first time making this an open book exam, changing the format of the paper as well. it was a good thing that it's open book because there's so much to remember (13 weeks of content!) despite the summarised content. many of us referred to the notes during the exam so it's handy to get the textbook! actually i think i referred more to the textbook than my notes during the exam, although there wasn't much of a need to read the textbook beforehand as Dr Ong would have picked up the main points in his lecture slides. i'll be selling the textbook too, let me know (in the comments) if you'd like to purchase it! we used the textbook by Santrock :)

Workload: 2/5
workload for this is relatively light after the 2 group projects. as my group had 5 of us, the workload for each of us was thus lighter. the playground group work was enjoyable because we get to go to a real playground to observe children and explore the equipments! the debate was also manageable because the other group that was on the same debating side as my group shared their content document with us so we did not have to research as much, and we contributed to their document too! win-win hehe :) there were no readings for this mod too yay!

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were held fortnightly as well. most of the time we had presentations for our group project, some times our tutor would spend the whole time talking and it was interesting to hear his point of views. he was very patient and knowledgable. my group was absolutely lovely, thank God for great group mates who were efficient and friendly!

overall, i enjoyed this module because the content overlapped with developmental psych hahaha. revision was easier as well as the theories portion would have overlapped with dev psych and the content was rather commonsensical. despite this, it was nice to learn about how we grow as humans throughout our lifespan, the changes we undergo and what had been happening over the news. the newspaper articles helped our learning by showing us that what we learn is real and still happens. i'd recommend this mod to those who are taking dev psych too! and even if you aren't, it is a nice and relatively easier module to take :)

CH1101e: Retelling Chinese Stories: Change and Continuity
Lecturers: Prof Koh Khee Heong
Prof Koh is super knowledgable about chinese stories, he makes classes really enjoyable! his lectures were very structured and his slides were clean and short. his teaching style was very different, we had alternate weeks of movies and lessons during lectures! for example, we'd spend 1 week learning about mulan and the contextual background and we'd spend the following week's lecture watching  mulan. how cool is that! most chill mod ever! although he spoke in mandarin for certain lectures and i struggled to keep up, thankfully he translated what he said most of the time. we watched 5 movies in total over the sem!

Weightage: 100% CA
20% Class participation
30% Presentation & Term Paper
25% 1st Quiz
25% 2nd Quiz
class participation is really important bcos it carried a higher weightage than your average mod. we just had to answer the presenting group's questions or ask them anything. my tutor was very nice, he told us that he'd give us a standard 70% for every tutorial and if we speak up, we'd get a higher percentage! so everyone is kinda safe. the term paper was a group work about our presentation, of which was about one of the movies that we are assigned to. the presentation was pretty chill too as the content we had to present was straightforward. as the groups are pretty big, about 5-6 people, the workload per person for the slides was little and manageable.

Exam format: open book
1 essay each
the quizzes were manageable, but you haveta study for it because it's just 1 question about the multiple movies at once. i actually enjoyed writing the essay and there was little pressure in the lecture hall. this is the first time a quiz was so chill hahaha. i'd say that the tutor and the lecturer were pretty lenient towards all of us so we did relatively well for our quizzes :)

Workload: 1/5
i'd give this the lightest workload because we spent half of our lectures watching movies haha! the readings were slightly painful but it was informative and interesting. we didn't have to prepare for tutorials also except for the week we are presenting. and our term essays were due 1 week after our respective tutorials so crunch time was only for 1 week.

Tutorial Format:
one point to note though, the presentation can be done in either mandarin or english. my tutor was from china and he spoke really fast mandarin during class and i didn't catch a single thing he said.. my group did our presentation in english but the 2 exchange students did it in mandarin, and i found out that he gave higher marks to the 2 who spoke mandarin instead... so yeap...
there was 1 presentation per fortnight tutorial and we didn't have to prepare anything much for the tutorial except our listening ears :) although there were readings for this mod, i feel that it was only supplementary and it was alright not to read it as it was not tested during the quizzes; it just helped us understand the societal background better!

overall, this was the best mod of my sem! i enjoyed it so much despite my very poor mandarin. 10/10 for CH1101e! i totally recommend yall to take it to clear your basket or as a UE. it actually sparked interest to other chinese history for me, i'm kinda thinking of taking another CH-related mod next sem haha, that's how good this module is for someone who can barely speak nor write in chinese :) so don't worry if you aren't proficient in your mandarin because i survived it and so can you! hahaha

GES1005: Everyday Life of Chinese Singaporeans
Lecturers: Prof Kenneth Dean
Prof Dean is a westerner teaching a chinese module in english. this totally blew my mind during the first lecture! he is so knowledgable about the temples in singapore and the chinese culture here. he spends most of the time during lecture rambling about his exciting findings and does not follow the course schedule. it was really tough for us to follow him because he doesn't really follow his slides nor schedule. although he had many slides, they were just slides of pictures so it was not very handy for revision. i didn't enjoy his lectures at all and going for it was a dread because i would always walk out of the LT not knowing what i've learnt sadly.. but my friend and i still went for it in case he'd say something about the quiz or our project that can help us haha.. the attendance for the module was really bad too despite the high headcount.

Weightage:
10% Tutorial attendance, discussion
10% Presentation
40% 2 Quizzes
15% Field report on temple visit using app
15% Written report on temple visit (group essay)
10% Written summary on family history
i like how the weightage is well spread out. the module pretty much revolved around our temple visiting project, where we would form our own groups and were assigned a temple to visit. at the temple, we had to interview the people who serve in the temple and observe / take pictures and videos of the different artefacts and architecture of the temple. we'd then submit our photos and videos through a specially designed app for the module, and then present about our visit during tutorial. however, my group was slightly different. as we were not comfortable going to a temple, our tutor let us choose a place of worship to visit, so we decided to visit my church and do a report on it! it was very interesting for me as i got to learn more about my church's history and current news.
the written essay on our own family history was similar to what i did in GET1002.

Exam format: No exams, closed book
1 take home quiz in week 6
1 final quiz in week 12
both quizzes were our thoughts about certain readings that prof dean assigned us. it was not easy at all because the writing was either too sophisticated or i had no idea what the article was about even after reading it countless times. these 2 essays were one of my most uncertain essays i have written in my uni life sigh.. but thankfully, the first quiz was a take home assignment so we could do it at our own pace. we had our second quiz in class.

Workload: 3/5
i'd give a 3 because there were many readings, tho irrelevant to our revision or quizzes if they were not included in the assigned readings for the quizzes.. i felt that i wasted my time reading through most of the readings as they did not really help during lecture either. but i did spend a significant amount of time going through the readings.. the take home assignment was rather time consuming as well because i didn't understand the assigned reading so crafting an essay about it was a challenge. the group report was quite time consuming as well, surprisingly. but it's less painful when you have lovely group mates, thank God for lovely group mates hehe!

Tutorial Format:
tutorials were also held fortnightly! each tutorial had a different agenda and i must say that it was quite interesting. we'd talk about our family histories, ghost stories, temple visits and more.

overall, i wouldn't recommend yall to take this module unless the lecturer changed. initially, i wanted to take this module because of the fun schedule that was listed, but it turns out much different than i expected. i also took it because the course assessment changed. there was a field work and interview in the previous semesters and this semester was a temple visit, which was something i'd rather do that a field interview haha. okay i kinda enjoyed this module except for the lecture and readings part. other than that, my group mates were nice and i knew most of them through college and church!

i can't believe i'm already halfway through my uni life!
i really enjoyed this semester because of the modules that i took, and it was not too hectic during the semester and during exams as well. although mid terms were a mad crunch and mad rush, the period after that (week 7 onwards) were pretty chill and i had no assignments to submit, so i had more free time than my previous sems! i was really happy because i got to use the time to meet my friends that i have not met in a long time, had good food over greater fellowship :-) i'm really thankful that i had minimal individual essays to write this semester because i'm so bad at them! i also enjoyed all the modules that i took, except for the small moments that lectures were boring and readings were painful. but the content overall was interesting and i'm so thankful to be studying what i'm studying now :-)
although, because i only took 2 psych mods this sem, it means that i'd have to take more psych mods next sem which is quite daunting for me.. quite scared actually but ah i'll get there when i get there.
i also had CAC+US this semester and i was worried that it'd take up a significant amount of time that'd eat into my studying time but thankfully it didn't because the performance date was pushed forward just when tutorials had started. so i wasn't lagging too much behind after the performance too.
God has been very amazing this semester. it was not as rough as my previous semesters, but every semester is a new adventure with Jesus. there was a constant battle i had to face daily this sem, something different, something foreign. it tested my trust in God. and every time i was tempted by thoughts of lousiness and worries, i had to constantly remind myself that God has a greater plan for me, God will only give me the best. and my definition of best may not be the same as God's definition for me, but one thing i know for sure is that God's definition of best for me will be earth shaking ground trembling hehehee. i'm even more happy that i got to spend more time with my church friends this semester, catching up with them in the middle of the semester. it's so easy to be blown away by the many attention grabbing activities in uni, i'm really thankful to have friends of Godly influence to ground me in Christ in the midst of the storms :)

i hope that you had a wonderful sem as well! enjoy every single moment in uni, time passes way too fast here :) remember that you aren't defined by your grades, but by what you do, how you treat others, what you do for others, how you treat yourself. there's more to life than just grades because it's just a number after all. and in the long run, it's hard work and effort that brings us to greater heights in our careers!

God bless!
